Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application (SCADA)

Student must be selected through a student research or poster presentation competition at the school prior to the IADR/AADOCR Abstract deadline. (Each school is sent a communication from Dentsply Sirona with relevant details.)

Student must be pre-doctoral student at the time of the IADR/AADOCR/CADR General Session.

Student must be a current member of the AADOCR (or join by the time of meeting).

Student must submit an abstract to the IADR/AADOCR/CADR General Session by abstract deadline. Student abstracts will be subject to the current abstract review process conducted by the IADR/AADOCR for scientific excellence.

Research presentations are judged in two (2) categories:

Category I: Clinical Science / Public Health Research
Clinical Science / Public Health Research presentations focus on clinical research questions in general dentistry or one of the clinical dental specialties and may focus on diagnostic approaches, interventions and/or prevention, and/or may evaluate clinical techniques, materials or devices directly related to oral health care. This category also includes educational research, epidemiology, public health, community-based, and/or public policy research.

Category II: Basic and Translational Science Research
Basic and Translational Science Research presentations are generally hypothesis-driven projects involving some aspect of basic or translational sciences. Translational research pertains to studies that investigate the application of basic science findings to clinical situations. Research in this category may address a technique or method involving a biological or physical science.

1. The student must first be selected by your dental school as its competitor for this competition.
2. A Dentsply Sirona representative will contact the selected student with complete information and instructions about the competition and program events.
3. The selected student must submit an abstract for the IADR/AADOCR General Session via the IADR/AADOCR online abstract submission process by the abstract deadline. On the on-line abstract form, the entrant must be listed as the presenter of the abstract entered for the competition. Co-authors, if any, should also be listed on both the abstract and the poster.
4. In the awards section of the online abstract submission process, select SCADA from the list of AADOCR Awards.

Candidates will be required to present their research twice: in a closed session to a panel of judges and publicly to AADOCR Annual Meeting participants, both in poster format. Details for both will be sent to the participating student.
 

A panel of judges will evaluate the poster presentations using pre-established criteria in a closed-door competition. Candidates have 10 minutes for their presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions and discussion.

Candidates will be judged on the quality and relevance of the subject matter, presentation, and professionalism.

Judges will select the top three winners in each category for a total of six competition winners.

Three winners will be identified for each Category [Clinical Science/Public Health Research] and [Basic and Translational Science Research] and will receive either:

• First Place – Monetary award of $1000,
• Second Place – Monetary award of $750, or
• Third Place – Monetary award of $500

International and dental hygiene students. We are pleased to announce that this competition also has an international and dental hygiene component. Students spanning 39 countries have participated in 18 similar competitions engaging more than 7,000 students. International students and the U.S. dental hygiene student who win First Place in their respective country’s competitions are invited to present their winning research on a non-competitive manner at the AADOCR General Session. AADOCR has no responsibility in the selection of the students but will receive the names of those attending the meeting.

All U.S. and International student participants receive:

• Prepaid Meeting Registration to the IADR/AADOCR General Session.
• Round trip economy class airline ticket to IADR/AADOCR General Session.
• Hotel accommodations for four nights (single occupancy) at AADOCR Annual Meeting.

And all participants are expected to:

• Attend an Orientation Seminar.
• Present research at designated times.
• Attend the evening awards program and reception hosted by Dentsply Sirona where the domestic winners will be announced and the international winners recognized for their accomplishments.
