In this process, mentoring holds tremendous significance as it guides post-graduate students towards their career goal and supports junior faculty in their academic growth. A key component of this is learning how to write competitive research grants. In today’s highly competitive environment at NIH and other funding agencies, these skills have become of even more paramount importance for young scientists to establish themselves as independent investigators. This workshop is designed to support the processes of mentoring and career development in a bidirectional way. First, it focuses on junior faculty and post-graduate students with the goal to enhance their grant-writing skills as part of an overall emphasis on research portfolio and scholarly productivity. Coinciding with this is the importance of building a close look at work/life balance expectations. In a parallel session, the workshop focuses on mentoring the mentors with a goal to promote effective communication skills, to address diversity and unconscious bias, to closely mentor mentees in all aspects of their academic growth, and to present techniques to synchronize mentor and mentee expectations.

Mentoring networks support the junior investigator pipelines, strengthens senior investigators' mentoring competencies, and increases sensitivity to unique challenges facing young investigators from diverse backgrounds. Such efforts are needed to develop a robust biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and public health research workforce. AADOCR MIND the Future is a new and unique model funded by the NIDCR and aims to build a vibrant and inclusive community of investigators.This workshop aims to engage young researchers in different elements of career development essential for success. The introduction to the workshop will be conducted by two speakers who will talk about the components of a successful research career and strategies to achieve them. The attendees will be then distributed into small groups led by two AADOCR MIND the Future Mentees. The table leaders will provide a brief background about themselves and initiate the discussion with the attendees, which should last for 20 minutes, including answering their questions about the program and its impact on their professional and personal lives. The table discussion will include career paths, research growth, peer mentorship, interpersonal relationships, and promote inclusivity in dental, oral, and craniofacial research. After the initial 20 minutes, the table leaders will move to another table for a similar discussion with another set of attendees for the next 20 minutes.

Advanced degrees require a substantial commitment, not only in terms of time and effort, but also mentally and emotionally. As a result, trainees commonly experience higher-than-average levels of stress and frequently report difficulty finding work-life balance. Intended for trainees of all types (e.g., dental and dental hygiene students, graduate students, dual-degree students, post-docs), this Hands-on Workshop will focus on the unique stressors experienced by trainees and offer participants skills for thriving during their training and beyond. The session will begin with foundational background about stress, mental health, and resilience before exploring evidence-based strategies that doctoral students can utilize to maintain perspective during these challenging years and navigate the inevitable stressors. Topics addressed will include stress management, maintaining work-life balance, and resources to support students’ emotional health. Featured panelists will include dental school faculty and administrators who are studying, addressing, and prioritizing trainee well-being, resilience, and work-life balance. The panelists will discuss workshop topics from their unique career backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives, offering stories of their real-life experiences, advice based on their training and mentorship of trainees, and skills informed by psychological science. Following a brief presentation of background information and basic skills, the session will be structured as an open agenda panel, with a moderator to help guide discussion, followed by small group activities. There will be an opportunity for attendees to use what they learn to set goals and create action plans for adopting wellness practices and finding work-life balance.

Sponsoring Group/Network(s): Salivary ResearchDescription: There is little doubt that the fields of salivary research and oral biology have made significant headway understanding the basic biology, development, and function/dysfunction, of the salivary glands in just the last five years. Clearly, these fields have benefitted from the advent and implementation of ‘omics technologies. Our speakers, Drs. Kevin Matthew Byrd and Blake Matthew Warner, along with their colleagues, published important and timely findings when they reported on the oral axis of SARS-CoV2 infection in 2021 which included the first integrated human single-cell atlas of oral cavity tissues. Dr. Song from Dr. Rose-Anne Romano’s laboratory published the first single-cell sequencing dataset for the mouse salivary gland in 2018. In 2020, two pivotal publications authored by Dr. Sekiguchi and Dr. Hauser used single-cell technologies to resolve transcriptional changes during murine salivary gland development. Groups are currently using these new technologies to characterize radiation-induced salivary gland damage and Sjögren’s syndrome immunopathology in a way not previously demonstrated. Single-cell and spatial multiomics technologies are being employed by researchers in all fields, underscoring the importance of acquiring a basic understanding and shared language with which to discuss and critically evaluate emerging scientific works with rigor. As with all new and emerging technologies, challenges exist for widespread implementation and adoption. Most simply, many groups may not have the financial support, equipment, or technical expertise necessary to conduct scRNA-seq or spatial multiomics analyses. On the other hand, in the realm of transparent science and open data availability, there now exist publicly available datasets and well-documented open-source software/platforms to test hypotheses without the need for upfront investment. This session aims to: 1. bring everyone up to speed on single-cell and spatial omics technologies, 2. discuss how they can be used to advance salivary research, and 3. explore the multitude of resources available for researchers to mine these rich datasets to advance their science.

Sponsoring Group/Network(s): Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research, Education ResearchDescription: Behaviors of patients and care providers play an important role in screening, preventing, and managing oral diseases. Changing oral health-compromising and adopting oral health-enhancing behaviors is possible and desirable, but always challenging. Many interventions fail to change behaviors or maintain behavioral changes over time due to how behavioral change is approached. Systematic, evidence-based behavioral interventions at interpersonal (e.g., patient and care provider), family, and community levels are more effective than interventions based on 'common sense' and assumptions about the changes that need to be made and how to make those changes. Approaches developed to facilitate behavioral change suggest that facilitators, including care providers, should follow the following steps: 1. recognizing a health issue caused by behavioral factors, 2. defining a target behavior, 3. identifying behavioral determinants, 4. selecting and applying proper behavioral change techniques, and 5. evaluating the impact of the behavioral intervention. Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to actively learn and practice the main actions involved in each of these phases through situations and scenarios similar to those they encounter in their clinical practice. Dental care providers trained in behavioral change are in a better position to engage in patient-centered care, promote prevention of oral diseases, and support self-management of chronic oral conditions. Unfortunately, behavioral change is not sufficiently covered in dental education programs and continuing dental education courses.

Description: Young patients with hypodontia, oligodontia, and anodontia require careful evaluation for tooth replacement therapy in a comprehensive fashion. Guidelines for intervention require flexibility, and infrequently some clinical conditions require aggressive intervention. A review of Delphi Studies for a subset of Ectodermal Dysplasia patients will serve as the basis for a broader discussion of who, what, where, and when indicated treatment should proceed. Multiple dental specialty providers can provide a team approach to address the patient needs and a discussion of parental vs. patient consent will be included.
FLS #2: Engineering a New Generation of Stimuli-responsive Biomaterials

It has been highly encouraged the development of dental materials that do not simply inertly fill a prepared cavity, but rather are capable of interacting dynamically with the host environment and adapting to it. Therefore, this Focused Learning Session will be focused on the design of polymeric systems capable of retaining a set of specifically coded instructions by virtue of their chemical structure, enabling them to interact with the oral environment and perform a desired function on demand.
FLS #3: Ingenuity and Limitations of Protocols to Assess Dentin Breakdown and Remodeling

A question one should raise is: Do outcomes from current in vitro or non-human experimental models provide insights into the actual contribution of dentinal proteases for tissue breakdown and potential for regeneration? This session aims to appraise the latest literature on this topic and invite participants to reflect about the posed question.
FLS #4: Heparan Sulfate Role in Inflammation and Bone Homeostasis

Track Selection: C, EDescription: The bone resorbing cells or osteoclasts are multinucleated cells specialized in catabolism, which participate in the formation of bone by helping recruit osteoblasts, the bone apposition cells. Extracellular matrix (ECM) components such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) also participate in bone metabolism. Heparan sulfate (HS), one type of GAG, is present in large quantities on cell surface and in the surrounding tissue. Heparin, a commonly used anticoagulant drug, is used in clinic and is a special type of HS, i.e. heparin contains higher level of sulfation and more iduronic acid residues than HS. The sulfation patterns in HS and heparin dictate the binding affinity to protein targets to manifest the selectivity in biological functions. HS and heparin have been shown to affect bone homeostasis with conflicting data. Several in vitro studies have not completely revealed the true effect of heparin and other tissue-derived smaller fragments of heparin in osteoblast vs. osteoclast function, possibly due to variations in study design and heparin/heparan sulfate composition. A challenge in the HS research field is to make structurally homogeneous HS oligosaccharides/GAGs to study their function. Very few groups in the U.S. can synthetically or chemically make these oligos. The Miguez lab in collaboration with Liu lab at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has generated and screened several low molecular weight heparin/heparan sulfate-like molecules with specific biochemical modifications to identify candidate molecules capable of positively affecting bone in cell-based assays and in vivo models of inflammation and bone resorption which will shed light into the structure-function of HS in bone biology and potentially identify novel therapeutics in bone diseases including alveolar bone homeostasis.

Track Selection: C, EDescription: Degradation of dentin organic matrix driven by endogenous enzymes has been considered a mechanism driving the progression of caries lesions and failure of adhesive interfaces. Current reparative/restorative approaches seek to strengthen and improving dentin biostability by mimicking its natural architecture and/or inhibiting its endogenous degradation. One thing that is important to appreciate is that during pathological conditions, degradation of dentin releases important bioactive molecules with the potential to promote tissue repair. This session invites participants to discuss 1) the hypotheses to explain the release and activation of dentin proteases, 2) the current restorative and reparative strategies to inhibit degradation and reinforce the tissue, and 3) novel findings showing how tissue breakdown and its reparative potential are innately connected.

Track Selection: C, EDescription: Zeolites are minerals with a tetrahedral crystalline structure formed by networks of AlO4 and SiO4 sharing oxygen atoms. These aluminosilicate networks create regularly distributed micropores and cavities that can exchange water, ions, and polar molecules with the surrounding environment, giving zeolites unique ion exchange properties. Therefore, zeolites can serve as nanoplatforms for the delivery of various therapeutics. Over the last few years, our lab has focused on improving the antibacterial properties of dental materials with silver and zinc incorporated zeolite as well as exploring the effects of zeolite as an anticancer drug delivery system and then implement these effects to cure periodontal and neoplastic disease of oral cavity. In this proposed session we would like to share our recent experience, information and project findings on Zeolite in terms of its use in dentistry. We hope that the presented information will open new research directions to the research teams of dentistry.

The symposia will take place over three continuous days during the 2022 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition, and each day will have an educational focus in support of the overall symposium goal.
This session includes a series of lectures by symposia organizers, oriented towards non-quantitative dental researchers and clinicians, to build a shared terminology for contemporary AI research. This includes a summary of legacy machine learning methods, a description of the capabilities and functions of deep convolutional neural networks (deep learning), and applied extensions of this technology. Emphasis will be made to illustrate examples with a “visual glossary” of terms whenever possible, and descriptions will remain non-mathematical. The session will conclude with a description of pitfalls for AI methods.
