Alexandria, Va., USA – Members of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) have elected Alexandre R. Vieira, University of Pittsburgh, Pa., to serve as the AADR Vice-president. His term will commence at the conclusion of the 50th Annual Meeting of the AADR, which will be held in conjunction with the 99th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), from July 21-24, 2021 in Boston, Mass.
Vieira received his D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and his D.D.S. and his Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He is currently a full professor of Oral Biology, Pediatric Dentistry, Human Genetics, and Anthropology, as well as the Director of Clinical Research and the Director of Student Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Pa.
Vieira’s research focuses on the genetic etiology of cleft lip and palate using dental development to characterize individuals born with cleft lip and palate and their family history of cancer, individual susceptibility to dental caries, both disease initiation and progression, genetic influence on craniofacial growth and deformities and the interplay with TMD and pain, and the impact of overall health on oral health. In 2006, Vieira created the Dental Registry and DNA Repository project, which keeps dental and medical clinical information of patients seeking care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine linked to a saliva sample. Vieira has written over 350 publications, 319 peer-reviewed articles, 32 letters to the editor, editorials, books, book chapters, book chapter translation and book reviews, and has published over 370 abstracts.
An IADR/AADR member since 1997, Vieira has held several IADR and AADR leadership positions, including President-elect, President and Immediate Past-President of the IADR Cariology Research Group (2015-18), Vice-president and President of the IADR Clinical and Translational Science Network (2016-20) and Director of the IADR Craniofacial Biology Group (2018-20). Vieira has served on a number of committees including the IADR Science Information Committee (2017-18), sub-committee for the selection of IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards (2015-20), the AADR Ethics Committee (2009-11), the AADR Hatton Committee (2015-17), Chair of the AADR Fellowship Committee (2012-14), Chair of the AADR Fellows Review Committee (2018-20), 2019 AADR Annual Session Committee and Chair of the 2020 AADR Annual Session Committee. He served multiple times as an abstract reviewer for the AADR Fall Focused Symposium, IADR General Session & Exhibition and the AADR Annual Meeting.
Vieira is an AADR Fellow and served as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Dental Research (2009-11). He won the IADR/AADR William J. Gies Awards three times (2006, 2013, 2017) and received the 2015 IADR Distinguished Scientist in Research in Dental Caries Award.
