Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro 2021 Recipient of AADR’s Honorary Membership

Alexandria, Va., USA – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) announced Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro as the 2021 recipient AADR’s Honorary Membership. DeLauro was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 50th Annual Meeting of the AADR, held in conjunction with the 99th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

DeLauro is the Congresswoman from Connecticut’s Third Congressional District, serves as the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, sits on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and is the Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, where she oversees U.S. investments in education, health and employment. She also serves on the subcommittee responsible for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, where she oversees food and drug safety.

DeLauro is being recognized as one of Congress’ strongest champions for science and for the nation’s federal research agencies, including but not limited to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). An ovarian cancer survivor, DeLauro has called NIH the “jewel in the crown of our biomedical research” and “the foremost biomedical research organization in the world.” Over the last five years, DeLauro has helped increase funding for NIH in total by $11.6 billion, including a $2.6 billion funding increase in fiscal year (FY) 2020. Among her efforts on behalf of research, DeLauro has advocated for women to be included in clinical trials, for the development of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at NIH, and for the doubling of the NIH budget from 1998-2003. She has also introduced numerous bills on behalf of the scientific enterprise, including the Accelerating Biomedical Research Act.

DeLauro strongly believes in the power of biomedical research and she is working to increase funding so that we can make lifesaving breakthroughs in science and medicine. She fights against special interests, like tobacco and e-cigarettes, which adversely affect public health.

AADR Honorary Membership is granted by the three most recent living AADR past presidents who are no longer serving on the Board and given to a person who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental, oral and craniofacial research.
