Alexandria, VA – The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research has named Emily Chu as the recipient of the 2025 AADOCR William Butler Fellowship. Chu, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 54th Annual Meeting of the AADOCR, which was held in conjunction with the 49th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 12-15, 2025 in New York, NY.
Chu has a longstanding interest in mineralized tissue, which was part of her PhD studies at the University of Washington School of Dentistry (UWSOD) and her postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she received a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award. At the University of Maryland, Baltimore, her research is focused on delineating the influence of phosphate and pyrophosphate modulators in cementum formation and regeneration. Chu received her DDS at the UWSOD, where she initially received funding through a T32 grant. Subsequently, during her Ph.D. tenure at UWSOD, Chu gained an F30 grant, a Cleft Palate Foundation Junior Investigator Research Grant, and was awarded the Warren Magnuson Scholar award, conferred annually to one outstanding UWSOD graduate student for exemplary academic performance and exceptional research potential in the health sciences. Chu is an alum of the AADOCR MIND the Future program. At UMBSOD, she has also received an IN-SPIRE award, which is given to promising projects developed as a collaboration between faculty members of two different departments.
The AADOCR William Butler Fellowship is in recognition of Dr. Butler’s many contributions to research in mineralized tissues and his prominence as a leading mentor and role model in the field. The immediate goal of this fellowship is to support researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers. The Fellowship is supported by generous donations from individuals and companies which created the endowment.
