Frank A. Scannapieco Named 2020 Recipient of the AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award

Alexandria, Va., USA, May 6, 2020 – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) announced Frank A. Scannapieco, University at Buffalo, New York, USA as the 2020 recipient of the AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award.

Scannapieco is Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Biology, School of Dental Medicine, The State University of New York at Buffalo. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology, has edited two issues of Dental Clinics of North America, serves on the editorial boards of Infection and Immunity and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and served as a referee for over 70 peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is Past-Treasurer of the American Association for Dental Research, and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology, American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Periodontology. He practices periodontics, and is an active educator and mentor for graduate, dental and college students. His research focuses on oral microbiology, molecular mechanisms of oral bacterial colonization, and the interface between oral and systemic health, especially the role of oral conditions in the process of respiratory infection. 

The AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award provides national recognition for outstanding efforts to foster and promote research training and career development of students, trainees, and junior faculty. It is intended to identify individuals at all levels of their career with an exemplary record of mentoring. This award was renamed in 2012 in honor of its first recipient, Irwin D. Mandel.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 IADR/AADR/CADR General Session, the award was given locally.
