Alexandria, Va., USA, May 6, 2020 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Barry Sessle, University of Toronto, Canada is the 2020 recipient of the IADR Gold Medal.
Sessle received his formative education and training in dentistry (University of Sydney) and doctorate (University of New South Wales) in Australia before spending two years with co-founding member of the IADR Neuroscience Group Ron Dubner at the National Institute of Dental Research (1968-70).
He was appointed to the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 1971 where he has promoted through the academic and administrative ranks. He currently serves as Professor (and Dean Emeritus), Faculty of Dentistry and Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
Sessle has published >430 scholarly research papers and book chapters (Web of Science h-index= 68) and 18 books and monographs. Most of his research has been funded by the Canadian Medical Research Council and the National Institutes of Health. He has provided service and leadership to the dental research community (IADR Canadian Division President and IADR President) and pain research community (Canadian Pain Society President and President, International Association for the Study of Pain).
The IADR Gold Medal is the highest recognition bestowed by the IADR. The IADR Gold Medal is presented to an individual who is a previous recipient of an IADR Distinguished Scientist Award (in any one of the current 17 categories) who has then built on their original scientific accomplishments to more broadly impact science, health research, or population health through expansion of their scientific field of inquiry into other disciplines or through higher administrative positions in academia, government, non-profit or private industry, or some combination thereof.
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 IADR/AADR/CADR General Session, the award was given locally.
