Alexandria, VA – The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research has named John Feathersone as the recipient of the 2025 AADOCR Distinguished Scientist Award. Feathersone, from the University of California, San Francisco, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 54th Annual Meeting of the AADOCR, which was held in conjunction with the 49th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 12-15, 2025 in New York, NY.
Featherstone was a professor and researcher at the University of Rochester, NY, from 1980-1995. He was appointed chair of the Department of Oral Sciences during that time and formed several national and international collaborations, conducting groundbreaking research on cariology, including the basic biologic mechanism of how fluoride works to prevent and reverse dental caries. He was an active collaborator in several clinical studies, always aiming to apply his research to solving the clinical problems of dentistry. His research was funded by NIH grants and industrial awards during those years.
He moved to the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry in 1995, where he was active in research and teaching until his retirement at the end of 2017. He served as Chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences and Dean of the School of Dentistry. His research included the development of CAMBRA or caries management by risk assessment and was funded by several NIH grants, industrial funding, and other funding agencies during that time. He was the principal investigator on numerous grants and an investigator on several other NIH-funded grants, centers, and program projects. He has had ongoing collaborations since his retirement and continues to give lectures and courses nationally and internationally. Featherstone has published over 320 research papers, book chapters, and other publications.
The AADOCR Distinguished Scientist Award recognizes outstanding research of particular significance in a field related to oral science. The award is presented every other year at the AADOCR Annual Meeting. The next award will be presented at the 2027 AADOCR/CADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Minneapolis, MN.
