Susana Salazar Marocho Named 2022 Recipient of AADOCR Procter & Gamble Underrepresented Faculty Research Fellowship

Alexandria, VA – The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) announced Susana Salazar Marocho, University of Mississippi, Jackson, as the 2022 recipient of the AADOCR Procter & Gamble Underrepresented Faculty Research Fellowship. Marocho was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the hybrid 51st Annual Meeting of the AADOCR, held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on March 23, 2022.

Marocho is an early-stage investigator and Assistant Professor in the School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She earned her B.D.S. from the University of San Martin de Porre, Chiclayo, Peru and her M.S., Ph.D. and completed her post-doctoral studies at the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP, Campus São José dos Campos), Brazil. Salazar Marocho continued her postdoctoral studies at the University of Mississippi. Her research focuses on dental ceramics, with an emphasis on their characterization, bonding, mechanical behavior, reliability, failure mechanisms and lifetime. Utilizing an integrative approach including standard and clinically relevant specimens, her research group is developing less expensive, less time-consuming and non-destructive methods for removal of high-strength ceramic restorations by using different settings of an erbium, chromium-doped: yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser.

The AADOCR Procter & Gamble Underrepresented Faculty Research Fellowship supports researchers from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups at the early stages of their scientific careers and increases representation of these underrepresented groups at the faculty level in science and academia. Recipients receive $10,000 that must be put towards their post-doctoral research, establishment of their laboratories, the completion of a research projects, or preparing for publication or grant submission.
