AADOCR P&G New Faculty Research Fellowship

The goal of this fellowship is to support dental, oral, and craniofacial researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers and to enhance career development at the faculty level in science and academia. Recipients will receive $10,000 that must be put towards their post-doctoral research, establishment of their laboratories, the completion of a research project, or preparing research for publication or grant submission.

All AADOCR members are encouraged to apply, which includes those who meet the eligibility requirements below, as well as individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as meeting two or more of these criteria:

1.    Have/had no parents or legal guardians who completed a bachelor’s degree.
2.    Were in the foster care system.
3.    Were eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years.
4.    Were eligible for Federal Pell grants.
5.    Grew up in one of the following areas: a U. S. rural or low-income area, a low- or middle-income country, or a health professional shortage area.

Applicants must:
- be an AADOCR member at the time of application,

- hold a DDS/DMD and/or Ph.D., or equivalent advanced degree, and
- hold an appointment at the post-doctoral, instructor, assistant professor level or equivalent at an accredited dental school or academic research center in the United States.
Applicants may apply for this award multiple times during the years in which applicants are eligible according to the criteria below, but applicants may only receive the award one time. As part of the terms of the fellowship, the award recipient must submit a report within 12 months of receipt of the award which describes the results of the progress achieved as a result of the fellowship.
The application includes the following and can be uploaded to the application site as separate documents:
- a letter of support from the applicant’s research supervisor or department chair (not more than one page)
- an outline of the candidate’s career plan (not more than 4 pages), 11 pt. font, including a career development plan and a description of how the fellowship will affect future research to be conducted by the applicant
- a project description (not to exceed two pages), excluding references, and should include hypothesis, methodology, plans for publications/presentations and a realistic timeline for the project
- a personal statement, indicating why the candidate should be considered for the fellowship (not more than two pages)
- the candidate’s CV or biosketch (not more than five pages)
- budget and budget justification demonstrating how the $10,000 will be spent. No indirect costs (F&A) shall be allowed (see ‘Award’ Section below for more information.)
The purpose of this award is to assist the awardee with 1) generating data, 2) obtaining research training or 3) traveling to a professional meeting or career development event to present data/or establish external mentorship or collaboration. Applicants will be evaluated by an AADOCR Fellowships Committee on the basis of the candidate’s CV, research project, proposed use of the award funds, and the support demonstrated in the supervisor/department head letter. The Committee will evaluate whether the proposed research project has the potential to advance the chosen field of the applicant. The applicant should propose reasonable aims that can be accomplished with the award amount and the applicant’s other current or expected financial support in the 12 months after receipt of the award and explain how this award will significantly contribute to the accomplishment of the applicant’s research project and/or advance their research career.
One Fellowship in the amount of $10,000 will be made. Funds awarded can be used for additional research assistance, e.g. to purchase research supplies, equipment, or software, or to compensate for research subjects for human studies, etc.; salary support for the applicant or research personnel; etc. Funds may also be used for travel to conferences and meetings to present data and to engage in professional development and networking opportunities, but the majority of the award should be used to support research activities. This award will be made to the institution (if applicable) and no indirect costs (F&A) shall be allowed.
